Reason for that are cracks which are result of “many years endurance” of amalgam filling which outside can look quite well even after 10-20 years. Through that cracks, bacteria can very easy find the way to root canals and cause infection. If the cracks are very deep, they can be also reasons for extraction (removing) teeth.
